Employee Spotlight: Jake Runnion Gets Technical

Last month, event professionals convened in Las Vegas for the tenth anniversary of Event Tech Live (ETL), the only event portfolio dedicated to event technology. Over two days, attendees explored the latest advances in event tech and heard from technologists from across the industry on everything from using technology for improving the attendee journey to how to maximize event tech ROI. One of those expert presenters was our very own Jake Runnion, Sr. Event Technologist, Production & Technology Services.

In his session, titled The Importance and Rise of the Event Technologist, Jake shared the importance of event technologists being involved in the event planning process and collaborating with clients to understand their needs and ultimately improve their event using technology.

Getting Technical

“I had a great time at ETL both as a presenter and an attendee,” said Jake. “It’s a great networking event, and it was awesome to hear about and see all the latest advances in event tech.”

We sat down with him to learn more about his knowledge in event tech and his role at M&IW. For more insights, click the button above to watch his recorded session from ETL.

Headshot of Jake Runnion

Tell us about your role on the Event Technology & Productions team at M&IW. When did you start and what is your current role?

I am a Sr. Event Technologist who specializes in SpotMe apps. I started in September of 2021 in the same role. This year will mark two years with M&IW!

Editor’s Note: Jake won the M&IW’s Rookie of the Year award during his first year as part of the team. He has made a big impact in a short amount of time!

What do you enjoy most about your position at M&IW?

I would say it’s the collaborating process both internally and externally. Working with coworkers to help solve a unique app need is always fun to me. It gets me thinking creatively!

How long have you been in the events industry?

This year marks my sixth year in the industry! Prior to joining M&IW, I spent 3+ years at SpotMe, so it was a natural move to come to M&IW to specialize in their apps.

What advice would you give someone hoping to start a career in meetings and events?

Be sure that you like to travel! Some of my favorite places I’ve gotten to travel to for work are Japan, Nevis, Costa Rica, and British Virgin Islands. I’ve been very fortunate to go to some amazing places with M&IW!

What is a new trend in event tech that you hope becomes an industry norm?

To me, I think I would have to say Artificial Intelligence (AI). As much as I am hesitant about it, especially creatively, I do think it would be a welcome addition to event tech. There’s a lot that can be done with AI such as chatbots and facial recognition software. SpotMe is already deploying some AI in their email templates that allows you to generate AI-created images.

What is something most people wouldn’t know about you?

I host trivia! If you’re in the Chicago area, come join me as I host!
